Drainage Systems
|
|
All drainage problems can be fixed utilizing one of three types of drainage systems.
- French Drain System
- Catch Basin System with Gravity Flow
- Catch Basin System with Sump Pump
|
|
French Drain Systems are for areas where you have a constant collection of water,
usually from an underground spring. These are the most costly systems to install because they involve excavating a wide trench which is then backfilled partially with gravel. Then a perforated pipe is
installed at a slope, which is then covered with more gravel. A layer of loam type soil covers the gravel if sod is to planted in the area.

Catch Basin Systems with Gravity Flow is the most common type of drainage system installed. It utilizes catch basins of different sizes to collect surface water.
Also gutter downspouts are usually tied into the system. The water then flows by gravity to a lower point, usually the street or alley.

Catch Basin System with Sump Pump is basically the same as the gravity system above. The difference is that the water drains to a sump basin and is pumped to the
street or alley using a sump or sewage type pump. The pump is activated by a float switch. This type of system is used where there is not enough change in elevation for the water to flow by gravity.
